From the 1930s to the late 1960s, Hollywood operated under the Motion Picture Production Code, a censorship system that restricted what could appear on screen. These restrictions included depictions of what it called “sexual perversion.” Rather than eliminating queer presence from American cinema, censorship helped create a sophisticated language of implication, subtext, and visual coding. Queer characters and stories survived through indirect, ambiguous, and often hidden forms of representation.

Drawing on film clips and historical context, this lecture examines how queer identities were erased, coded, villainized, and concealed under the Code, as well as how audiences learned to interpret meanings that could not be stated openly. It also considers how queer actors navigated an industry governed by restrictive moral standards.

By tracing these strategies of representation, the lecture explores a central paradox of Old Hollywood censorship. The very system designed to suppress queerness also helped shape the visual and narrative conventions through which generations of filmmakers represented it and audiences learned to recognize it.

Taylor Nuckolls (she/her) holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology with a minor in Film Studies from Saint Louis University and a Master of Education in Societies, Cultures, and Languages from the University of Ottawa. She is currently a Communications professor at Algonquin College and has a longstanding passion for film, history, and pop culture. Her undergraduate research focused on queer film history and the ways media can shape cultural attitudes and perspectives. Her graduate work explored inclusive adult learning environments and the role online platforms such as TikTok can play in contemporary adult education. Taylor is especially interested in how meaning is created, communicated, and interpreted through media. She firmly believes in the importance of semiotics and that the curtains are never “just blue.”
